Dr. Jeffery Lewis, an Atlanta native, has been practicing gastroenterology in Atlanta since 1996. He was a founding partner of GI Care for Kids in 1999.
Dr. Lewis has been at the cutting edge of clinical care in pediatric gastroenterology. He was the first to do a pediatric fecal microbiota transplant in Georgia. He has participated in more than 50 clinical research studies at GI Care for Kids since 2000 offering access to therapies before they are available to the public. Studies have examined new treatments for celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and even autism. He is one of our video capsule endoscopy experts and is also one of two physicians placing the IBstim (ibstim.com) device for certain patients with chronic pain or cyclical vomiting syndrome.
In 2008, Dr. Lewis and parents of children with celiac disease organized Camp WeeKanEatit, a 3-day family camp at Camp Twin Lakes. More than 100 people attended that first camp and it continues now as a summer camp for kids 8 and 16 who are on a gluten-free diet. Check out the camp’s web page at glutenfreecamp.org in July 2024 we had over 100 campers from throughout the United States! Our next camp will be in 2025.
Dr. Lewis trained in pediatric gastroenterology at Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital). In the past, he has been the chief of gastroenterology for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, served on several CHOA including Chair of the Peer Review committee and on the board and committees for the Georgia Academy of Pediatrics. He is very active in the community as an advocate for children’s health and this was recognized by the state in 2015, with a special award from the Georgia Department of Public Health for the contributions he has made treating children with special needs. He is currently on the board of directors for The Children’s Care Network and serves as the vice-chairman of this clinically integrated network of over 2000 pediatricians and pediatric specialists. He has co-authored papers on many topics ranging from the GI manifestations of HIV and AIDS to the challenges of diagnosing children with complex medical disorders.
Along with several of our doctors at GI Care for Kids, Dr. Lewis has been recognized by his peers as one of Atlanta’s top doctors in Atlanta magazine each year since 2016. He sees patients at our main office as well as in Cumming. His amazing nurse Angie has been with him since 2007.
