An Atlanta native, Dr. Weitzner is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology. After receiving his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, he completed his residency at Augusta University where he served as chief resident in the Department of Pediatrics. He then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology with Emory University at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) where his research of the pediatric microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease was published in a prestigious journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. He joined GI Care for Kids in 2022.
During his medical training, Dr. Weitzner received a grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics to co-direct an obesity intervention program for families of overweight or at-risk children. He also actively contributed to the pediatric community by serving as a counselor at Camp Rainbow, a camp for children affected by cancer or rare blood disorders and a camp doctor for Camp Weekaneatit, a camp for children with celiac disease.
Prior to joining GI Care for Kids, Dr. Weitzner worked as a hospitalist at CHOA Scottish Rite and was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Emory University. Dr. Weitzner has presented both locally and nationally on various digestive topics, including eosinophilic esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and nutrition. He has lectured at the Augusta University, Emory University and Morehouse College Schools of Medicine. He has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and also contributed to a book chapter on malabsorption. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN). Dr. Weitzner has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Atlanta Magazine.
Although he has a passion for all gastrointestinal disorders, Dr. Weitzner’s primary areas of clinical interest include inflammatory bowel disease, feeding disorders, and nutrition.
Dr. Weitzner enjoys exploring the outdoors, watching soccer and college football, and spending time with his wife and two children.
