Dr. Blumenthal was born and raised in suburban Chicago. He attended Vassar College where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa-Magna Cum Laude with a BA in biochemistry. In addition to the numerous awards he received in the sciences, he was honored with the Vassar Fellowship in Medicine. Dr. Blumenthal attended Cornell Medical College where he graduated with honors as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. While attending medical school, he spent an additional year at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute studying immunology.

Dr. Blumenthal continued his medical training as a pediatric intern and resident at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He spent the first year of his pediatric GI fellowship at North Shore University Cornell Medical College. To further pursue his research interests in intestinal physiology, Dr. Blumenthal completed his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at the University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital in Madison where he was actively involved in both inpatient and outpatient care. While in Madison, he taught gastroenterology at the school of veterinary medicine and the medical college.

Dr. Blumenthal is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.
